What is complex care?

What is complex care?

Complex care is specialist support for someone living with a chronic or long- term health condition or a disability that requires assistance to be able to manage their symptoms and complete daily activities to achieve quality of life. The healthcare issues could be the result of clinical or medical negligence or could be brain damage, a brain injury, spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, gastrostomy feed such as Epilepsy, PEG and learning difficulties.

In addition to providing complex care, carers should also facilitate the person to be able to lead an independent, fulfilling life where possible.

Who can provide complex care?

Carers can provide complex care with the correct training and experience, as mentioned above complex care can involve many medical factors and the carer will need to be proficient in specialist care.

Recruiting and retaining the correct care team can be challenging for the person and their family as they will need to find a carer with the relevant experience and expertise for the person’s needs.

Complex care is a person- centred support that is tailored to the person’s needs, also known as long-term care or continuing care.
