Action for Brain Injury Week 2022 - See the Hidden Me. After a Brain Injury.

How have you helped your client alleviate their challenges?

I have helped my client to alleviate some of their challenges by listening to them.

Helen Burrow, Case Manager

I have helped my client to alleviate some of their challenges by providing excellent trained support workers who enable the client to live their lives as they would like to. I have supported families of brain injury clients by ensuring they are part of the extended team and have access to all the training if they wish to do it and can access the clinicians for advice and support when they need to.

What victory moments or success stories can you share?

After suffering a brain injury, my client has had success in living independently outside of his family home. By engaging well in therapies, working with his support team to effectively manage risks and adopting routine and structure, my client has successfully lived alone for 1 year and has now moved to a different city to attend university.

After suffering a brain injury, my client has had success in leading a life that is more purposeful to them than prior to the accident.

After suffering a brain injury, my client has had success in developing an independent antique restoration and sales business which is growing from strength to strength!

Amy Williams

After suffering a brain injury, my client has had success in being able to food shop on line using checklists for what is needed. Instead of taking three hours it now takes 30 mins.

One therapy that was successful for my client was SALT and specialist cognitive communication training for both the client, family and support workers.

What more can we do?

We can do more to help survivors of brain injuries by understanding their challenges and the impact this on their daily life activities. I wish that people would understand cognitive fatigue versus physical fatigue.

Introducing assistance such as apps and aids. My client has overcome one of their challenges from their brain injury by using the Timetree app which is a shared calendar with her support workers. It also has a checklist function which is really useful for making sure nothing gets missed.

Using tools! I have set my client goals to help them with their challenges, such as remembering to put their lenses in before applying makeup. The use of memo notes with the process written on it has helped enormously.

Be patient. One of the biggest challenges my client has faced is organising their day with relevant and appropriate pacing of activity. It’s hard when this is something that you never had to do before your brain injury and now you can’t do the simplest things due to becoming cognitively overloaded.

Do not assume that one brain injury rehabilitation journey fits every client! Not every therapy works for each client, I have reviewed and adjusted my clients rehab journey by making sure that therapies are delivered in a timely manner and not too many therapies at one time. It is a misconception that clients should have as much therapy as possible at one time when actually they are unable to benefit.
